Why can’t I cope? Why am I like this?
I should be able to cope, other people have it much worse.
I should know what to do.
I should be able to do this on my own by now.
I should be able to control myself.
I should be able to change my situation.
I should be able to take care of myself.
If you are suffering under the weight of ‘should,’ it’s okay to let that go. You don’t need it where you are going.
The Story of Should
Should is the story we tell ourselves about who we think we need to be in every situation. Should implies an expectation, an obligation.
Often when you aren’t able to meet your “should,” shame and guilt can follow, making it even more difficult to get the help you need. It is an isolating experience and a painful cycle.
Symptoms of anxiety, depression and unresolved trauma can drown out the things that once felt good about life, magnify the problem areas, and leave you feeling powerless. Feeling powerless leads to feeling hopeless.
Wherever the “should” narrative picked up in your life, whether it is old or new, it is possible to begin rewriting that story today. Individual counseling can help you to find healthy ways to cope with your ‘right now’ and make positive changes for your future.
Understand and Embrace Who You Are
Our work together will not only focus on helping you feel some relief right now, but also on helping you to understand and embrace who you are and how you want to show up in the world.
You Are Worth It
Even though we never know how short or long the journey will be… you are worth that investment. The only relationship you will be in forever is the one you are in with yourself.
